CAWP Supports Construction Camps in Westmoreland County

CAWP participated in the 2010 Summer Construction Camps from June 21-25. These camps, aimed at seventh and eighth graders, were held at the Central, Eastern, and Northern Westmoreland Career and Technology Centers. In the week long construction camps, over 40 students engaged in hands-on construction related projects and instructional activities. The camps culminated in field trips to several apprenticeship schools.

All of the students visited the Western Pennsylvania Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship site, where they learned about the skills needed to be a heavy equipment operator. Led by instructors, they had the opportunity to operate various pieces of equipment. One of the groups of students also visited the new training center of the Greater Pennsylvania Regional Council of Carpenters, where they learned about the heavy/highway, commercial, residential, pile driving, millwright, floor covering, and cabinet making training at the apprenticeship school.

The Construction Camps were sponsored by the Westmoreland County Building and Construction Industry Partnership, Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board, CAWP, Western Pennsylvania Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship Training Program, Greater Pennsylvania Regional Council of Carpenters, Central, Eastern, and Northern Westmoreland Career and Technology Centers, and C.H.& D. Enterprises. These construction camps represent CAWP’s ongoing efforts in workforce development.
