Where did you go to school and what was your major?

I attended the University of Pittsburgh (H2P) where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a Master in Education in Communication & English Education.

How long have you worked in the construction industry?

I have worked in the construction industry for nearly two years but had various other construction-related experiences through my previous job as a building manager at the University of Pittsburgh.

What was your first position in the industry and what do you do today?

My first experience within the construction industry was while I was a building manager at the University of Pittsburgh. In this role, I supported all renovations and capital projects in the student union.

In my current role as Mascaro Construction’s Human Resources Generalist, I am responsible for recruiting efforts, onboarding new hires, learning and development for current employees, and hosting/attending workforce development events within our surrounding communities.

Why do you think this is a great industry for women to consider when looking at career paths?

Construction is an exceptional industry for women to consider because the possibilities for career exploration and advancement are limitless. Whether a craft professional in a union pursuing a dream of becoming a superintendent or a project engineer dreaming of earning a project manager position, women have the opportunity to choose a career path that supports both their professional and personal goals.

Why is workforce development an important initiative to you?

Our workforce is on the brink of a crisis as we prepare for baby boomers in the skilled trades to retire. At Mascaro Construction, we work diligently to solve this problem by attracting people to the industry, encouraging them to explore the exciting options available, and helping them decide the best route for them, whether it be the trades, a technical school, or higher education.

I am so proud to be a part of the construction industry and believe that supporting more women to enter the workforce is one of my greatest professional purposes.

What do you enjoy most about the industry?

Hands down, the people! I’ve been fortunate to work with many incredible professionals, but those in the construction industry are humble, hungry, and smart; and I feel lucky every day to be surrounded by such wonderful people.

What would you do if you DIDN’T work in construction?

I can’t imagine working anywhere else, but if I had to choose, I would probably be a high school guidance counselor so that I could help young people see that there are plenty of exciting and rewarding career opportunities within the construction industry.
