HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN SAFETY?

I began working for Donegal Construction Corporation as a summer job and I guess you could say hard work paid off- I have been the Safety Compliance Director for 11 years.

In your experience, how has the construction safety industry changed?

Over the last 10 years the industry has seen more emphasis put on building a stronger, safer, industry by investing in the employees who are on the front lines everyday.

National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is April 17-21, 2023: what is its significance to you, and how will your company raise awareness during this year’s event?

It’s an opportunity to raise awareness with the traveling public who rely on the services provided by our industry. We will distribute orange t-shirts with a safety slogan on them and hold tool box talks that focus on this event.

What are some methods you have implemented to reduce work zone speeds, distracted driving, or overall jobsite safety?

Letting our workers know that if they don’t feel safe with the traffic control plan established, to speak up and suggest changes, or stop work if necessary.

as a CAWP Safety & Risk Committee, can you describe what this role meant to you and its importance in the industry?

What do you hope to see in the future regarding safety in the industry?

During the planning and design of projects, more emphasis put on positive protection devices and rerouting traffic to better protect the workforce.

What advice would you give young professionals entering the safety field?

Find a mentor and be a part of an organization like CAWP– and always remember there is no copyright on safety!
