Ali Mills, CAWP President

Women in Construction Week (WIC Week) is an annual event to celebrate the role of women in the construction industry. In its 26th year, WIC Week has been supporting and promoting the vital role women play in construction.

This year also marks the first year that a woman has become President of the CAWP Board of Governors. Ali Mills, President of Plum Contracting, Inc. has been an active leader in western Pennsylvania’s construction industry and now has taken on this leadership role with CAWP.

In celebration of WIC Week, we ask Ali to reflect on her accomplishments and the career opportunities that construction offers women.

Congratulations on being the first female President of the CAWP Board of Governors. What does this achievement mean to you, and what do you hope to accomplish in this role?

I am honored that I can bring a new perspective to our association in an industry that is always evolving. Having faced many challenges being a woman, and now a mom, in our field, I am humbled to be a representative of working moms and women in our industry with CAWP.

Why do you think the construction industry is a great industry for women to consider when looking at career paths?

Our industry recognizes that women represent a talent pool needed to fill our increasing employment demands. The scope of opportunities, increasing demand for both skilled and professional workers within the construction industry, and financial benefits make this an appealing path to women..

Looking forward, how do you think women will continue to impact the construction industry?

More opportunities are opening up for women in all areas of construction that can only enhance the success of the industry.

As a woman executive in construction, what do you enjoy most about this industry?

I love that our industry is always evolving and presents new challenges daily, and it is an industry that takes great pride in our nation and the work of our people.

If you DIDN’T work in construction, what career path do you think you would have taken?

Through CAWP & AGC I have had the opportunity to learn how legislative affairs play a role in our industry which I find fascinating. I’d love to be a lobbyist advocating for our industry.
